[Dacia] If there are two words that make me steer well clear of a fic, they're 'chibis' and 'children'. *shiver* I like my gw boys grown and able to perform carnal acts with one another, thank you very much. *grin* And if I wanted kids to be in the mix, I'd be reading het fics. It shouldn't really come as a shock to those of you who know me that I don't particularly like children. *squirm* I may be sweeter than bee pollen, but there's not a mothering bone in my body. All of which makes it very surprising that I've come to really, really, really like Keara san's 'Young Hearts'. *shrug* It's the premise of this fic which makes up for all the youngsters flooding past my safety valves. The idea of cloning the gw crew isn't a new one. Heck, every time a new part of Lone Wolf's Rejects Arc comes out, I feel a need (which, oddly enough, I never follow through with...) to rec him. But all of those clones, which are only of Heero and Duo, are of an age -- like having a twin (or several) that you never knew about. What Keara has done is to make her clones children, but not just any old children -- children who are exactly like what the gw crew would have been at that young age, complete with all the fear and anger, mistrust and bitterness -- things which they never should have had to feel and which they now have a 'second chance' of escaping with the tenuous help of their older counterparts...

[Dacia] I read this 1x2x1 fic at a time when I thought there was no chance in a Backstreet Boys hell that I could ever write a fic for Sharona san's first ever Moments of Rapture contest (for which this fic was written). Little did I know how wrong I was. ^_~ I have to say, though, that this fic really inspired me. I read it and thought, 'that's damn good. There's no way I could top that'. The whole idea of the relationship between Heero and Duo being as volatile as it is romantic just floored me, I swear. It still does. This one has been sitting in my mailbox since it was written over a month ago, so I figured it was about time I just went and recommended it already. After all, if you hadn't guessed by now, the whole reason behind this whole rec page is so I don't forget what I really like. *grin*
[dominique] The author describes it as "fun, sappy and brainless" which, I guess, is accurate :). It's a sweet little story with a relentlessly pursuing Heero and a not-very-resistant Duo. Plus, hot kissing. What more could you want?

[suzu] Duo reflects on his relationships (sexual and otherwise) with Quatre and Trowa, and ponders how things might have turned out, had he made different choices.
While this is somewhat of a love triangle fic, it's very well done. What I particularly liked about it was the fact that, in the end, when the final pairing was revealed, everyone involved stayed friends. There was no screaming and wailing, no name calling - it was all handled very maturely and responsibly.
There are brief mentions of Wufei and Heero, both of whom are portrayed as sympathetic and understanding, which I also liked.
[ZeroTwoFan] Duo discovers he has feelings for Quatre, but he's not the only one who does.

[Dacia] In the gw world, fanfics are quite literally a dime a dozen. All you have to do is take one trip to the dreaded, yet necessary, evil of ff.net and look at the sheer numbers of gw fanfics there to realize that you have no hope of denying this as absolute truth. And a heck of a lot of those fics are good, where 'good' is defined as you not having felt as if you've thoroughly wasted you're time by reading them. ^_~ As much as I love gw in general, and as much as I enjoy giving in to my obsession on a daily basis, it's when I come across a fic like this that I begin to comprehend the vague glimmer of the mystery that is my gw adoration. When Pond first posted this to the ml's, I didn't know what to expect. I usually can get at least a hint of what's to follow from a title, but this time... nothing. But it was Pond, for chrissakes, and as she happens to be on my exclusive list of authors whom I always have faith in, I didn't hesitate to read it. Sure, we've all read those 'finding each other' fics. Heero and Duo have 'found' each other so often and in so many different circumstances that they might as well be joined at the hip to begin with. Reading this fic, though... it's like a breath of fresh air. Instead of reliving what we have experienced so many times through the eyes of so very many talented authors, it's as if we ourselves are falling, for the first time...

[Dacia] I love fanfiction. I know, I know -- I continually and insistently dwell on the absurdly obvious, don't I... But it still strikes me, even after all this time and having mentioned it so often, as something worthy of note. Fanfiction has taken over fulfilling this intense need (and I won't belittle it by calling it anything less than that) that I have had to read which sprang to life with startling ferocity when I was about 5 and has continued unabated until now. GW started it all. I watched the series, I watched the OVA (and there are times when I like to use the term 'OVA' simply because I'm the only one, until now, who knew that I don't know precisely what 'OVA' stands for...). And it wasn't enough. I wanted more. Thank god on high for the internet, ne? Can you imagine that there was a time when I thought the www was a complete and total waste of time? I've changed my mind a bit on that one in the meantime, needless to say. After I discovered the rapturous world of the yaoi gw fandom, there was KwG. Then wk. And DBZ... At this point, I'll read almost anything as long as it's yaoi and well-written and has characters I can care for even if I might not quite know who they are. But it's always gw I return to. And it's only gw that I can read and read and read and not need a break from. Fics from other fandoms might make me smile or laugh or cry or squirm, but it's gw that messes with my head and makes me think of Duo as a real person (yah, I know -- I'm alot of things but 'delusional' is not one of them) and gets me to re-read and search and prod and poke the fanfic world with my patented fanfic pointing stick until I really might seem obsessed. It was as I was reading my latest discovery ('latest' being perhaps the wrong term, as I had been aware of its existence and the authors merits for quite some time) that this all came back to wallop me upside the head as it so often does with, I might add, absolutely no sense of remorse. 'Magic Happens' is a story. In it, bad, violent things happen. There are secrets and mysteries and men with guns and hateful intent. There are touching moments between Heero and Duo, and realistic ones full of misunderstandings and betrayals and heartache. It is well-written enough that I'm breaking my somewhat lax rule of rec-ing only one fic per author and coming up with all this drivel. It is unique enough that it has no chance of boring me and familiar enough that I can understand what's going through Duo's mind even as he's thinking it. But what strikes me most of all is how exciting and thrilling and wonderful it all is... even after all this time.

[dominique] If I had to point to one piece of GW fanfiction that had the perfect Heero-characterization, this would be it. This is, simply put, what Heero is about. Erm... this concludes my shortest rec ever written ^_^. But seriously, this is a very, very good piece of fanfiction. It tore me up, ripped my heart out and got me near tears. Then I had to read it again, because it's one of the finest stories ever written.

[suzu] This always makes me terribly sad when I read it, though it has a satisfactory ending. It's Duo's POV - he and the others are at a school and he's called into the Dean's office and accused of being a homosexual. Forced into counseling by the Dean (which he needs to go to to maintain his cover) Duo becomes very bitter about his life and how he's treated. A kind-hearted man also forced into these "counseling" sessions teaches him how to start to accept himself, his friends, and get on with his life.
The OC in here isn't really a main part, so don't shy away because of that. Duo still pines after Heero throughout, but after being forcefully dragged from the closet, he's fairly certain the pilots won't ever consider him the same way they used to.
This is very heartrending writing. Having grown up with a homosexual and having watched how his "friends" and family treated him when he came out, I can say this is a true-to-life story....and I probably shouldn't have re-read this just before going to bed, because now I'm depressed.

It's not even really shounen ai, although there might be hints if you squint your eyes just right. It's simply an incredibly well-written fic of a quiet moment shared between Duo and Quatre. [dominique] This is a short little fic that gave me more insight in Heero's character than several longer, more drawn-out stories I've read. The premise is actually very simple: Duo screws up on a mission, gets hurt and Heero takes care of him. But there's a wealth of really good characterization in this piece, both of Heero and Duo, and that's what makes this fic stand out in a bit of a tired genre.

Surely there was a time before we fell under the yoke of Mariemaia's rule...?

Updated: 2000 Rating: R Chapters: 16/16

Recommenders: suzu, Dacia, Damoyre
Recommender Notes:
[suzu] This fic is a "what if" scenario. What if Mariemaia had won the war? What if the pilots and their companions and been spread far and wide after their loss - some lost to death, some to prison, and some to their own despair? Now suppose, through strange twists of fate, careful planning and carelessness on the part of Mariemaia's people, things start moving towards the beginning of an uprising to end all uprisings? That's "ANATEXIS".
As I write this, I am at part 11 and I keep repeating "Oh my god!" and waving my hands about, caught up in the suspense and the tragedy that fate has brought to the pilots. The phrase continues into chapters 12 and 13, where I am now pounding on my computer desk - the suspense is killing me, and I am feeling the emotional pain of everyone involved. My stomach is twisted in fear for them, and in sorrow for those who look like they aren't going to see the end of this story.
A final "OH MY FREAKIN' GOD!!!" and I've reached the end of chapter 14. I'm damn close to tears, and I think I'm going to need some tums before I turn this off and turn in for the night. I've got the epilogue to go - they'll determine whether the tears fall or not.
This is no typical gundam war fic. It is more "adult" than most I've read, and in my opinion paints a much more honest view of war. So many very unpleasant things take place here (though not in the sense that it's "graphic" - it's not). It's more along the lines of old friends that have become bitter, bitter enemies, people manipulating other people, and horrid, senseless death. In other words....war. There is no humor here, no prattling Duo, no silent and solitary Heero, no misogynistic Wufei, kind and gentle Quatre or quiet and enigmatic Trowa. In other words, each has been brutally shaped by the path the war took, and you'll find no fanon stereotypes here.
As for the epilogues...if you need a lift after reading this, go with the second epilogue. It's much lighter in tone than the story and has some nice, if somewhat melancholy warm fuzzies - just what I needed before I finally head off to bed. Besides those tums.
[Dacia] I don't think I've ever read a gw fic without an apparent yaoi paring in it somewhere. Not once. I jumped into gw fanfiction through the hectic and disorganized joy that is the structurally defunct Yaoi no Hentais, and haven't looked back. Without my gw boys getting 'together' *nudge nudge wink wink* what would be the fun? Or so I've always thought. Why the hell am I so often wrong? *laugh* It's a good thing I'm such a good loser, or I wouldn't be here telling you about the grandeur that is Anatexis (and in my head it sounds like 'ana' 'texas', but I spose that really is beside the point... ^_^ ). The beauty about series that end is that they never really do, do they. I mean, think of Endless Waltz and then think 'after'. If you're half the gw fan I am, you've got a million and a half images that come flooding into your mind at the thought. All those 'what ifs' have been written and rewritten by some of us, and loved and adored by us all. Usually, these concepts follow the idea that the good guys did indeed win in the end, just like the good guys are supposed to do. But what, says the devil's advocate, if they didn't. What if the good guys lost. What if the future that the gundam pilots fought for was destroyed and twisted, just as they were. No, *sigh* it's not a pretty picture -- I'm not saying it is or that it could be. But it is an engrossingly emotional one, and it does leave you in a sort of strangely fulfilled shock thinking of what might have been...

[suzu] "Set in Stone" is one of those rare fics that focuses on building relationships between the pilots without focusing on sexual elements - and I can't stress just how much I enjoy that fact. There are pairings in the fic, but there's no sexual focus, really. The story's more about character, love, and friendship than gratuitous hanky-panky. It's a wonderful thing. During a mission gone terribly wrong, Heero is severely injured and the pilots are unable to find assistance. While working on the situation, they discover just how close they've become, and just how far they'll go to help someone who's become much more than just a comrade-at-arms. This is a Heero/Duo focused story. The others, as well as Noin and Sally, are present, and play vital roles in the plot, but the main of the story is the blooming feelings between those two. Heero isn't quite the stone cold bastard he's usually portrayed as, nor is Duo The Fool. They're both cunning boy soldiers learning about themselves, what it means to be part of a group, and what it means to love another.

[Lady Sorka] This is a haunting Duo POV. I've read a lot of stories dealing with depression and cutting (SI), but this is the best (in *any* fandom). If you've never dealt with severe depression, this is what it's like. Incomplete. (Note - I'm not the fondest of the characterization in this story, but I need to rec it purely for the reality factor.)

[suzu] A year after the war with Mariemaia, the pilots are called in by Une because of a disturbing discovery - the Scientists have again been playing god by experimenting with children - in other words, genetic engineering. The remaining live experiments are taken in by the pilots, and roughly 15 years later is when the main of this story takes place. Julie, the adopted daughter of Duo and Heero, is 15 years old and doing a report on the Gundam Pilots, of whom there is almost no information. She has no idea that her parents or "uncles" are said pilots, or that she was a genetic experiment. She is an extremely intelligent young woman, however, and is starting to dig up material for her report that intrigues and confounds her. As the story progresses, we learn more about what exactly the scientists did to her and the other children. Don't let the beginning fool you - this POV is not in the least bit childish, even though Julie may giggle and call Duo "daddy". The story is extremely well written, and Marika creates original information regarding the background of the war that is very interesting. There is also a side fic to this, a Katie POV: "Me Myself and the Whole Damned World"

[suzu] *scratches head* I could have sworn I read this a long time ago, but apparently I only read the first few paragraphs and for some reason didn't continue. If I had, it would have been immediately rec'd. First off, this is not a happy story at all, although there is some humour in the beginning. During the war, Duo works hard to bring Heero out of his shell, and does his best to learn about Heero as a person and not just the Perfect Soldier. A little Heero teasing, some mockery, innuendo, and things are moving right along until Duo realizes he's fallen for the other pilot. Eventually the feelings are returned..but with conditions. Heero's devoted his life to peace - it means everything to him, and holds the largest part of his heart. Should he ever have to choose between Duo and keeping that peace, well....he can't promise Duo that he'd choose him. Flash forward several years. Things are going well. The wars are over, the two are together as a couple and they couldn't be happier. Enter Relena with an ultimatum that will change everything, and leave two lives a shattered mess. This is not a Relena friendly story, but I hesitate to call it bashing. She is not the screechy stalker-child so many fics portray her as. She is....I'm not quite certain mentally ill is the right word for it, but I can't really say much more without giving away the ending. Delusional? Unbelievably unaware? Clueless, maybe? Like I said above, this is not a happy story, and I had this achy knot in my stomach while reading it and while fearing what the ending would bring. If you really want to make yourself miserable reading this, haul out the old CD player and put Garth Brook's "The Dance" on repeat. The story itself should make you teary - the song combined will have you bawling.

[Nitid] This is by far one of the longest running, most detailed and thoughtfully written 1x2 fics out there. Written from Heero's pov, it explores his emotions, sexuality and relationships after the war, and is quite an interesting read, mainly because Heero's descriptions can be so clinical and blunt, and yet he feels so intensely. Another strong point of this fic is the setting and background, (aka 'research'), which many other authors in this fandom skip over. The social and political differences between the colonies and the Earth are distinct, and the feeling of being in the future is subtly underlined by the many references to technology and old customs. One of the best fics in this fandom. Now, I don't want to sound like I'm brainlessly gushing and kowtowing to an author to curry favour. I don't always agree with the way Heero and Duo are characterised, Trowa can be annoying, and there are some jarring typos, and a few Heero-Relena interactions that just make me raise my eyebrows. However, with all that said, this story is very much worth checking out, even if you aren't a Gundam Wing fan. I have some snobbish literary friends who demand high standards from their fanfic; Good English is de rigeur and an involved plot with half decent characterisation would be considered just competent. If I had only one shot at convincing them of the validity and attraction of Gundam Wing fanfic, this would be it. I no longer follow this story as fervently as I did in the first 20 chapters or so, but there are still a lot of interesting plot developments that make me check up on it every month. (Note: crossdressing alert!)
[suzu] This and Karan's "Revelations" Arc are my all-time favorites. This one is a Heero/Duo get together fic. After the war, Heero disappears for a while to "sort things out", while Duo enrolls in school with Relena to complete his education, while also working for Preventers and running his own business. After a while, Heero realizes that he desperately needs Duo, and searches him out. Unfortunately, Heero's "weirdly socialized" (Seraph's terms) and doesn't quite know how to go about winning Duo. With the help of some well-meaning friends, they set out to teach him what to do. Because he knows next to nothing about sex, Heero has decided to train himself on what to do before he will attempt anything with Duo. Hot? Indescribably so, and unbelievably kinky, but so, so tastefully done. I have NEVER read sex scenes like this before - Seraph's imagination, along with her skill in writing and attention to detail makes this fic come alive. And I kid you not on the detail. She has Heero identifying as Russian as well as Japanese, and she has the language usage to support this. She has more tiny but oh-so-important detail in this fic than I've ever seen anywhere. And that makes all the difference in the world. Be forewarned - there is a LOT of dark content in this story. Mental illness abounds, and dark subject matter springs up constantly. She's also delving into the "Newtype" idea of the other Gundam universes, which I think is too cool. Note - anyone bothered by Duo's...ah...rampant bedjumping, just stick in there, it does get better.

A comment jokingly made by Heero, with whom Duo shares an apartment, suddenly makes Duo wonder if he's looking for a relationship with the wrong type of person. This is a well-done fic with both Heero and Duo re-evaluating their lives and sexual preferences. While there is angst, it is in keeping with the storyline and does not get out of hand.

[suzu] PWP's that still have some substance and feeling behind them are wonderful things. These two fics contain both, as well as the hot sex that is the prerequisite for a PWP. [beckerbell] Ever since memlu posted the first episode of GundamW on her journal, I've had the itch to go back through some of my old favorites that I never quite got around to recommending. For as much GundamW fic as I'd read before this one, this fic will always be special to me because it took me from not really caring for Relena's character to having this sudden clarity of understanding. It was like someone had finally explained her instead of just preaching about how great and wonderful she was, you have no idea how rare that used to be, how rare it was to find a Relena fan who wasn't as militant as the anti-Relena fans. But this fic came along. And I had this whole new world of possibilities opened up for me because of it. I have great fondness for the writing and characterization of this story, the technical aspects of it are very solid. There's some fangirl Japanese and maybe a little stiffness to it, but considering this was written at least six years ago, it's holding up brilliantly well. But what really drove home the coolness for me was the way it drew parallels and connections between Relena and Duo's characters, made me realize why their interaction could be so incredibly flat-out awesome. For all that this fic isn't 2xR, it also gave me my intense love of that pairing. I like the pacing of the fic as well, the focus of the fic is put on the two versions of Duo in the two mixed up worlds and the two ways Relena's character could have gone. (I think Heero and Relena having been switched might have worked even better for me because they're such inverted mirror images of each other, but I also like that this focused on Duo and Relena, because it was about a new understanding, a new connection, rather than expanding on one that was already there.) I like that the author didn't ignore that aspect of the fic, even while it wasn't the point. It created this nice little fic that always stuck with me as the one that finally explained Relena to me in a way that I understood. So much love for that alone. (Some Heero/Duo, some AU Heero/Relena, some Duo/Relena-not-romance, but 2xR fans might like it.)

And eeeeee! This is what I want from GW humorfic, because it was silly, funny, but not completely out of character--hell, Duo was perfect here, mentally weighing the pros and cons of throwing a snowball at the back of Heero's head. The inner dialogue running through his head was not only IC, but it fairly well sparkled from the perfectly phrased. Plus, it was lovely for what it said about the pilots, especially Duo's, about their lives, but without having to remark on it or linger over it. And Heero was just about the most perfect I've seen in a long time. The fic was perfect. ♥ (1+2, but could have been gen.)

More stories in this arc are apparently planned, but what's there already can be considered complete.

[beckerbell] I was just randomly stumbling around to look for fic to read by authors I recognized, when I happened to see this one. I don't read a lot of GundamW fic because not much gels with me, but I stopped on this one and... it was nice. A nice post-war piece where I can still recognize the characters, but also see that they've grown up. They're beyond what they used to be and yet it still shaped who they became. One of the best lines in the piece was from Duo thinking to himself, They’d thought they knew it all back then, but they really had just been kids trained to kill. Now they were men with skills rendered useless and harsh memories to never let them forget what they once were. Toss in very nice Heero/Duo UST, a restless quality in Duo that's easy for the audience to understand but doesn't quite connect for the character, and a very nice use of the kiss theme... and, yeah, I liked this fic. <3 (Heero/Duo.)

[beckerbell] This is a short little GundamW fic, but I like the author's work a lot and it was Heero and Duo, how could I not at least give it a shot? And it was just a neat little fic, Heero and Duo's friendship so very... well, Heero and Duo. The characterization fit with them very well, the way you can sense their issues lurking under the surface, how badly messed up they can be at times, but without making it the focus of the fic, it was actually something of a more light-hearted fic. It's just. It's Heero without being over the top about his near-suicidal tendencies that aren't really suicidal at all, just really, really uncaring about the risks. And it was. I mean. I'm kind of flailing in my attempt to show how much I loved this little fic. (No warnings/pairings.)
[Kat] This is very IC for them, I think. Duo would worry, and Heero wouldn't think to.
